1. tantrum /ˈtæntrəm/ (n) a sudden short period of angry, unreasonable behaviour, especially in a child

to have/throw a tantrum
Children often have temper tantrums at the age of two or thereabouts.

2. serve (v) (in tennis, etc.) to start playing by throwing the ball into the air and hitting it

Who's serving?

3. batter (v) to hit sth very hard several times

The rain battered against the windows.
Huge waves battered the little ship.

4. burst (n) a short period of a particular activity or strong emotion that often starts suddenly

a sudden burst of activity/energy/anger/enthusiasm
Her breath was coming in short bursts.
I tend to work in bursts.

5. widthway /ˈwɪdθˌweɪ/ = widthwise (adv) across the width of sth, rather than the length; in the direction of width; from side to side

6. edge sth (with/in sth) (v) to put sth around the edge of sth; to form the edge of sth

The handkerchief is edged with lace.
A breeze shook the tall trees that edged the lawn.

7. tramline /ˈtræmˌlaɪn/ (n, often pl) the outer markings along the sides of a tennis or badminton court

8. baseline (n, usu sing) a line marking each end of the court in tennis or the edge of the area where a player can run in baseball; the line that marks the back of the playing area in games such as tennis

She delivered a final serve from the baseline to win the match.

10. forehand (n, usu sing) (in tennis, etc.) a way of hitting a ball in which the inner part of the hand (= the palm) faces the ball as it is hit

Her forehand is her weakest shot.


11. backhand (n, usu sing) (in tennis, etc.) a stroke played with the back of the hand turned in the direction towards which the ball is hit

He has a good backhand (= he can make good backhand strokes).

12. volley (n) (in some sports, for example tennis or football/soccer) a hit or kick of the ball before it touches the ground

She hit a forehand volley into the net.
That was a marvellous backhand volley.


13. bounce (v) if sth bounces or you bounce it, it moves quickly away from a surface it has just hit or you make it do this

The ball bounced twice before he could reach it.
~ off sth = Short sound waves bounce off even small objects.
The light bounced off the river and dazzled her.
~ sth (against/off sth) = She bounced the ball against the wall.
The ball bounced off the post and into the goal.

14. lob (n) (sport) an act of hitting or kicking a ball in a high curve through the air, so that it lands behind the person you are playing against

15. dreaded (adj) (formal dread) (only before n) causing fear; (often humorous) frightening or worrying

The dreaded moment had finally arrived.
(humorous) Did I hear the dreaded word 'homework'?
(humorous) He would have to deal with questions from his dreaded father-in-law.
My dreaded cousin is coming to stay!

16. dread (v) to be very afraid of sth; to fear that sth bad is going to happen

~ sth = This was the moment he had been dreading.
~ doing sth = I dread being sick.
~ sb doing sth = She dreads her husband finding out.
~ to do sth = I dread to think what would happen if there really was a fire here
~ that... = I both hoped and dreaded that he would come.

17. hand (v) to pass or give sth to sb; to give sth to sb by holding it in your hand and offering it to them

~ sth to sb = She handed the letter to me.
~ sb sth = She handed me the letter.

syn: give, pass, deliver, hand over, present to

18. skim (v) to move quickly and lightly over a surface, not touching it or only touching it occasionally; to make sth do this

~ across/along/over, etc. sth = We watched the birds skimming over the lake.
The ball skimmed across the grass and stopped against the wall.
(figurative) His eyes skimmed over her face.
~ sth = The speedboat took off, skimming the waves.
(figurative) This report has barely skimmed the surface of the subject.

19. deuce /djuːs/ (n) (in tennis) the situation when both players have 40 as a score, after which one player must win two points one after the other in order to win the game

20. set (n) one section of a match in games such as tennis or volleyball

She won in straight sets (= without losing a set).
Sampras took the first set 6-2.
Nadal won the second set 6-4.


21. tiebreak (US tiebreaker) (n) (in tennis) a period of extra play to decide who is the winner of a set when both players have won six games

The first set was won on a tiebreak.
Nadal won the tiebreak 7-5.

22. headband (n) a strip of cloth worn around the head, especially to keep hair or sweat out of your eyes when playing sports

These lovely curls and the pretty floral headband caught our eye.
